The material shared in this workshop is a small sample of the therapeutic training provided by Caring Families Aotearoa. The workshop focuses on what caregivers wished they had known 'right from the start' of their caregiving journey, and is based on feedback we received from them.

We now know through the science available that tamariki placed into care need to be parented in a different way to enable them to heal. In this session, we will touch on the impact of developmental trauma (ACEs), mistrust, developmental age and how behaviour comes from a place of shame.

Understanding this allows caregivers to nurture the relationship they have with their tamariki and to provide a secure base for them, the very thing that they have missed out on in critical years of their development. It will provide you with an understanding of why tamariki do what they do and give you knowledge to respond in a different, therapeutic way.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To gain an understanding of Developmental Trauma (ACEs) and how this impacts the child’s internal working model.
  2. To explore the concept of mistrust, shame, and developmental age.
  3. To consider therapeutic parenting and why we need to parent in a different way.
