This session increases awareness of what Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) actually is, moving from intentional behaviour to symptoms of FASD, as well as providing strategies to help you.
This learning opportunity is developed by caring Families Aotearoa and is delivered in partnership with Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children as part of the National Caregiver Training Programme (NCTP) for all caregivers in New Zealand.
Learner outcomes
By the end of this facilitated discussion, caregivers will be able to:
- Have an awareness of FASD.
- Shift thinking from behavioural to brain-based neurodisability. (Neurodisability = a group of congenital or acquired long-term conditions that are attributed to impairment of the brain).
- Identify eight key strategies in working with children affected by fetal alcohol.
- Respond to child’s behaviours differently with the understanding of how this behaviour may have been influenced by the impact of maternal drinking on the child’s developing brain during pregnancy.
- How to access support, if caring for a child with FASD.
