This workshop will introduce (at a high level) development of tamariki and how trauma impacts this. It will look at how experiences impact and shape the child’s development. While journeying with the tamariki, caregivers will be encouraged to build a support network for when help might be needed so that the environment can support the tamariki to flourish.

This learning opportunity is part of the National Caregiver Training Programme (NCTP) developed by Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children for all caregivers in New Zealand and is delivered by Caring Families Aotearoa.

Overview

Caregivers will begin to think about the realities of child development and how that fits in with personal experience. As a caregiver, you will view what role you play in tamariki development. You will be provided with a base level of what effect trauma has on tamariki brain development and how you can change the narrative of identifying and supporting tamariki as they develop. Be a part of shifting the ‘change development’ kōrero/discussion to focus on when tamariki arrive at developmental stages and why. Lastly, while journeying with tamariki, what supports are in place for you as the caregiver and how will you build them?
