In this workshop we will introduce participants to the development of tamariki (overview) and how trauma impacts this. We will look at how experiences impact and shape the child’s development. While journeying with the tamariki, caregivers will be encouraged to build a support network for when help is needed so that they can support tamariki to flourish.

This learning opportunity is part of the National Caregiver Training Programme (NCTP) developed by Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children for all caregivers in New Zealand and is delivered by Caring Families Aotearoa.

Summary

When we look at how experiences impact and shape the development of te tamaiti (the child), caregivers may feel the effects of this in the care environment/home they are providing. We will look at how Caregivers can change the narrative of identifying and supporting tamariki as they develop. We will also look at how to build a support network for when help might be needed, so that the environment caregivers are providing can support the tamariki to flourish.

When we facilitate training for caregivers, this is who we include: Whānau/Kin Caregivers, Permanency Parents, Foster and Whānau/Kin Caregivers who have tamariki placed with them by an Iwi social service, Agency, or Oranga Tamariki.
