This course will explain the legal processes, obligations, and expectations that are in place in New Zealand to support and protect both children in care and caregivers. It has been updated to share new legislation, information, and activities.

We offer two learning options for this course:

1) Virtual Facilitated Sessions – Two, 1½ hour facilitated virtual sessions (3hrs)

2) Face to Face workshop – 4½ hour workshop that facilitates deeper understanding and collective learning with peers

These learning opportunities are part of the National Caregiver Training Programme (NCTP) developed by Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children for all caregivers in New Zealand and are delivered by Caring Families Aotearoa.

You are registering for the two, 1½ hour facilitated virtual sessions

Summary

Legal processes have been created to protect and support tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people) in care. We will introduce the processes, explaining what obligations and expectations are associated with each process. Part 3 of the National Care Standards provides entitlements and supports to caregivers, and we will outline and explain what these are. You will be given the opportunity to explore concepts, share experiences, reflect, and take away ideas of how you can practically apply your learning to support te tamaiti or rangatahi in your care. Caregivers will have the opportunity to build their foundational understanding of the major laws governing how we look after tamariki who come into care along with the legal and practical expectations of providing care to tamariki.  We will discuss the importance of the role of a caregiver promoting stability and maintaining the tamariki’s connection with siblings, family, whānau, hapū, iwi and family groups.

When we facilitate training for caregivers, this is who we include: Whānau/Kin Caregivers, Permanency Parents, Foster and Whānau/Kin Caregivers who have tamariki placed with them by an Iwi social service, Agency, or Oranga Tamariki.
